After a stay at the IMSUT (Institute of Medical Sciences, University of Tokyo), he joined the INRA (National Institute of Agronomic Research) as a Research Fellow. There he established and developed the model of avian embryonic stem cells from 1993 to 1998. After a stay of 3 years as R&D Director of the biotechnology company Vivalis (now Valneva), he joined again the INRA Institute where he studied the pluripotency mechanisms in avian and agronomic species and identifies pluripotency genes in avian species for the first time.

B. Pain is currently Research Director at INRAE, within the SBRI, Stem Cell and Brain Research institute, U1208 INSERM, USC1361 INRAE in Lyon where his team studies pluripotent stem cells and develops somatic reprogramming and differentiation approaches, notably through the development of organoids.
